Let’s be honest – life’s a bit of a rollercoaster.
The ups are amazing, the downs can be tricky, and in between we’re all just trying to figure out how to feel good in our own skin. That’s why I’m such a fan of Carol Ryff’s framework of psychological well-being, it’s a bit like a map for living a balanced, fulfilling life that feels true to who you are.
Her model talks about six key areas that make up real well-being. Not just “I’m okay today” or “I’m not feeling bad,” but actually feeling connected, purposeful, confident, and like you’re growing as a person. And here’s the thing - these six areas are just as important for kids as they are for adults. In fact, the earlier children start exploring them, the stronger their foundation for life will be.
That’s exactly why I built the Mindful Mushkins around these principles. Each Mushkin story is rooted in one of these areas, helping children discover who they are, how they connect with others, and how to navigate the bumps along the way, all through fun, relatable adventures that make sense in their world. The Mushkin characters were created to be positive role models - especially for children who might not always have those examples around them, showing what kindness, courage, and resilience can look like in everyday life.
So, what are these six magic ingredients to well-being?

Self-Acceptance – Liking yourself as you are (yep, even the wobbly bits). It’s about knowing you’re enough, mistakes and all, and having a kind inner voice.
Positive Relationships – Building friendships and connections filled with kindness, empathy, and trust – and knowing how to repair them when things go wrong.
Autonomy – Having the confidence to make your own choices, stand by your values, and trust your instincts.
Environmental Mastery – Being able to handle whatever life throws your way and shaping your surroundings so you can truly thrive.
Purpose in Life – Having things to work towards. From big, dreamy goals to small daily wins that make you feel proud.
Personal Growth – Always learning, stretching, and discovering new sides of yourself and seeing challenges as opportunities, not roadblocks.
In our stories, each Mushkin brings these ideas to life:
They show kids it’s okay to be perfectly imperfect.
They model kindness, empathy, and problem-solving in friendships.
They make brave choices and trust themselves to decide what’s right for them.
They adapt to new challenges and create spaces where they feel safe and happy.
They dream big and celebrate the small wins along the way.
They grow with every adventure and invite children to grow alongside them.
And because stories stick, we follow each one up with simple, hands-on activities. These give children a chance to put the lessons into action whether that’s reflecting on a challenge they’ve overcome, setting a goal, or trying out a new calming strategy.
For me, the heart of Mindful Mushkins is this... every child has the potential to grow into the very best version of themselves, not by accident, but by learning the skills, values, and mindset that will help them thrive. Carol Ryff’s framework gives us the blueprint.
We just make it extra magical, memorable, and accessible and friendly role models for every child, no matter what their starting point in life looks like.
