My Mind, My Strengths!
Understanding feelings, thoughts and positive self-talk. Ages: Kinder – Year 6
Service Description
Wellbeing & SEL Outcomes Students build emotional vocabulary, link physical sensations to emotions, and practise self-affirmation supporting Self-awareness and Self-management strands of the Australian Curriculum. Why Educators Love It Combines neuroscience, creativity, and emotional safety in a meaningful and accessible way. Help children explore their thoughts and feelings through this creative, brain-building experience. Rae Mushkin guides students on a journey of self-awareness and self-acceptance, using playful metaphors and hands-on activities to help them understand their inner world. Children are introduced to the idea that all thoughts even the tricky ones are part of being human, and that how we speak to ourselves matters. This empowering session introduces key brain functions in child-friendly language including the prefrontal cortex (our decision maker), amygdala (our alarm bell), and hippocampus (our memory keeper). Through hands-on creation and expressive movement, children learn how their brain and body work together to process emotions. What We Explore 🎨 Create a 3D brain model using clay to represent the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex. 📖 Use storytelling and gesture to explore how each brain part helps us think, remember, and respond. 🖌️ Engage in Bilateral Drawing, a calming art process that supports integration across both brain hemispheres. 🧠 Match physical sensations to common emotions using Rae’s “body-brain” visual prompts. 💬 Practise turning unkind thoughts into kind ones with “thought switch” and self-talk sentence starters. 🌬️ Learn simple strategies to calm the brain when it feels overwhelmed through breath, movement, and kindness. What Children Grow Each activity supports the development of: 🧠 Self-awareness – Recognising how thoughts and emotions feel in the brain and body 💬 Positive self-talk – Building inner language that supports confidence and calm 🎨 Creative self-expression – Using art and movement to explore internal experiences 🧩 Brain-based understanding – Learning how different parts of the brain work together to help us navigate the world 🌿 Compassionate curiosity – Approaching feelings and thoughts without judgement
